Ukraine is reinforcing the embattled eastern city of Avdiivka with “fresh forces”, a top commander has said.

Brig Gen Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the commander of the Tavriia army group, said: “We strengthen the blocking line, set up additional firing positions, and use fresh effective forces. Logistical delivery continues.”

The commander added Russian forces were attempting to capture the Donetsk region city “at any cost and as soon as possible”, in a second battlefield update on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukrainian forces defending against the Russian onslaught face an increasingly perilous situation, with widespread reports of manpower and ammunition shortages.

The decision to continue bolstering Kyiv’s defences of the city, rather than a retreat to a more fortified position, raises the prospect of a repeat of the brutal months-long battle over nearby Bakhmut.

Brig Gen Tarnavskyi’s remarks could hint towards the 3rd brigade, one of Ukraine’s best units, which has been sat in reserve and training on Western weaponry, being brought into the fight for the city.
