The best new luxury buys for men

These We Cannes Ski mid-length shorts by Orlebar Brown are part of the label’s range of photo-print swimming trunks — the image shows the famous Carlton hotel on La Croisette and channels a Côte d’Azur sea, sun and sand vibe. The tailored-fit Bulldog style has distinctive adjustable side fasteners and is made from a quick-drying fabric.

If you’re looking for a brand that specialises in trousers, check out Incotex. Founded in Venice in 1951, it is part of the Slowear group and offers smart and casual styles, with this slim-fit flannel model combining both: a drawstring waistband provides comfort while the fabric and pleat mean it is still elegant.

The ultimate weekend bag

Berluti is the designer of the Team France uniforms for this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games. But the house is best known for its work with leather. In the Eighties Olga Berluti developed a technique to apply patina to the brand’s shoes for added richness and depth, and this treatment now extends to bags, including the Toujours zipped travel bag in Ice Gold soft Venezia leather.

In the red zone

Dior’s Chiffre Rouge was launched 20 years ago, an asymmetrical design featuring the colour red, which Christian Dior described as the “colour of life”. It has now been revived in a collection of eight (the couturier’s lucky number), with that digit — which comes around once a month in the date window — in red; the others are white. The house’s “cannage” motif is on the dial and appears on the oscillating weight and strap.

The weatherproof jacket to see you through spring

Famous for its extraordinary research into fabrics, Stone Island has in the past made pieces using stainless steel. So it’s appropriate that its new poster boy is tough-guy film star Jason Statham. We like the 41123 Membrana 3L TC hooded jacket, which is water and wind-resistant and also breathable. It’s lightweight, made from a performance fabric composed of three layers, and comes in four colours. Stylish, functional and protective.

Quintessential checks

In many ways this checked number, the Cheltenham coat, says it all about Holland Cooper. Based in the city that gives the garment its name (and is home to steeplechase horseracing), the company specialises in a contemporary country look. This mid-length wool coat in Glen Green is single-breasted, has a gently pronounced shoulder and tailored silhouette, and will ensure you look on point at the point-to-point.

The new polo

One of Sunspel’s core pieces is the Riviera polo shirt. Dating from the Fifties, it was remodelled for Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and comes in a unique mesh material made from Supima cotton. Now the British label is taking two luxury fabrics it also specialises in — Sea Island cotton and cashmere — and blending them in a new open-placket, long-sleeve polo. A soft and comfortable, versatile trans-seasonal piece.

Spot your suitcase

Rimowa, the German firm that introduced aluminium suitcases in 1937 and is known for its grooved pieces, launched the world’s first case made from polycarbonate in 2000. Today the material is used in its Essential lightweight luggage, which is also tough — and pretty: if you want your case to stand out at the baggage carousel, they come in green, pink, navy and sea blue.

Military fashion

Applied Art Forms is the brainchild of Guy Berryman, the bass player in Coldplay, whose fashion brand is inspired by his archive collection of vintage pieces. The new BM1-8 dispatch jacket is based on a French motorcycle jacket from the First World War. Made from blue cotton cavalry twill, it is a ten-button double-breasted design with a stand-up collar, British Navy-style ring buttons and inner pockets.

Time travel

You may know Bennett Winch for its luggage, but one of the British company’s gems is its watch rolls, available in different versions to store one, two or three timepieces. Kevlar panels coated with Italian leather on the outside and faux suede inside create a protective container when folded up and an elegant display unit when unfurled. Ingenious and stylish.

Classic simplicity

The Patek Philippe Calatrava is considered one of the most elegant and refined round wristwatches. It is also eminently collectible. This ref 5227J model with a yellow-gold case has only a date display to interrupt the ivory lacquered dial with its gold-applied hour markers. There’s a self-winding mechanical movement and sapphire crystal caseback with protective invisibly hinged dust cover, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 metres.

Vintage inspiration

“Back in the Nineties I bought a suit in a second-hand store on Portobello Road that I loved,” says Oliver Spencer, who has just recreated that garment as the Mansfield jacket in Rackfield black/white, matched with his Morton pleated trousers. The combo in a puppy-tooth check design looks laid-back but also smart.
