Kaiserslautern vs Bayer Leverkusen predictions

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a rare bout of disappointment on Wednesday night.

A 3-0 defeat by Atalanta in the Europa League final put paid to their hopes of a unique treble. It also ended Leverkusen’s ambition to go an entire season without a single loss in all competitions.

Anyone who watched the Europa League showpiece in Dublin will know that Atalanta were worthy winners. A magnificent performance from hat-trick hero Ademola Lookman ultimately made the difference, but the Italian outfit were the better team more broadly.

Leverkusen, it has to be said, did not rise to the occasion. The pre-game favourites did not do themselves justice and Xabi Alonso could have no complaints with the outcome.

That said, we should not lose sight of what has still been an extraordinary achievement by Leverkusen in 2023/24.

Alonso’s team became the first in the history of the Bundesliga to win the title unbeaten. This weekend, they have the chance to claim a domestic double by lifting the DFB-Pokal trophy in Berlin.

To appreciate the scale of that accomplishment, consider that only three German teams other than Bayern Munich have won the double – and none of those did it without suffering a defeat.

Finishing in the top four of the Bundesliga this season would have been progress for Leverkusen. Yet they have done so much more than that, upsetting the odds to not just finish above RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, but to leave Bayern Munich in their wake too.

Their path to the DFB-Pokal fine has seen Leverkusen eliminate the likes of Paderborn, Bundesliga runners-up Stuttgart and Fortuna Dusseldorf.

On paper, this is a kinder tie than they could possibly have hoped for. Kaiserslautern are the first finalists from outside the Bundesliga for more than a decade.

Despite missing out on the Europa League, Leverkusen are one win away from yet another remarkable feat.

Kaiserslautern vs Bayer Leverkusen betting tips

Kaiserslautern and Bayer Leverkusen will face off in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin this weekend.

Bayer Leverkusen -2 handicap – 5/4 (Betfair)

Bayer Leverkusen should not take anything for granted on Saturday.

Kaiserslautern have nothing to lose and everything to gain at the Olympiastadion, with all the pressure on Leverkusen’s shoulders. The second-tier side will also hope that Leverkusen’s loss to Atalanta on Wednesday has a spillover effect into the DFB-Pokal final.

Remember, though, no German team has beaten Leverkusen since May 2023. That includes the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and RB Leipzig, all of whom hosted Alonso’s side at their own stadium.

Kaiserslautern have not exactly set the 2. Bundesliga alight either: they ended the season in 13th place, just three spots above the relegation play-off berth.

All things considered, Leverkusen should come out on top reasonably comfortably. A win by more than a two-goal margin is a distinct possibility, as Alonso’s team aim to finish this incredible season on a high.

Bayer Leverkusen to score in both halves – 7/5 (Star Sports)

This bet looks like remarkably good value given that Bayer Leverkusen are massive favourites to come out on top in the German capital.

Leverkusen scored in both halves in 24 of their 34 Bundesliga matches this season, by far the best record in the division.

In recent months they have been the kings of late goals, frequently striking at the eleventh hour to preserve their unbeaten record.

It would be a surprise if Leverkusen needed a late effort to prevent defeat on this occasion, but their attacking quality is such that it is difficult to see Kaiserslautern keeping them out.

After all, this is a team that ended the league season with the joint-second worst defensive numbers in the second flight of German football.

Provided they are fully focused and have got the disappointment of Wednesday’s loss out of their system, Leverkusen will have plenty of joy going forward here.

Tip Leverkusen to score in both halves at 7/5 with Star Sports

Florian Wirtz to score any time – 13/8 (bet365)

Florian Wirtz is one of the many Bayer Leverkusen players whose season is set to extend beyond Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final.

The attacking midfielder looks set to be a key part of the Germany XI led by Julian Naglesmann, and he certainly has the potential to be one of the standout performers across the entire tournament.

Wirtz made his comeback from a serious knee injury in January 2023, but Leverkusen obviously had to manage his minutes in the second half of last season.

This time around, he has been front and centre in their success. Wirtz has provided 15 assists and scored 15 goals across the Bundesliga and the Europa League this term.

He has also been productive in the DFB-Pokal, having found the back of the net three times in five appearances.

We like his chances of making it four goals in this tournament on Saturday.

Choose Florian Wirtz in the anytime scorer market at 13/8 with bet365
