Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich predictions
Borussia Dortmund will host Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker on Saturday evening.
Clashes between Dortmund and Munich are the most anticipated of the Bundesliga season, and ones that most neutral fans always look out for when the fixture list is revealed.
Ahead of the Matchday 12 showdown, Dortmund sit fifth in the Bundesliga with 19 points from 11 matches. Bayern is top of the table with 28 points, they have a six-point lead over second placed Frankfurt.
In their last five domestically, Dortmund has won three and lost two. A quick look at their results make it immediately clear where their strengths and weaknesses lie.
Dortmund has a 100% record in the Bundesliga at Signal Iduna Park. Die Schwarzgelben have six wins from six on home turf. On the road, Dortmund has drawn once and lost four times.
Throw in cup matches, and Dortmund are eight from eight in all competitions on home territory. A 7-1 win over Celtic on Matchday 2 of the Champions League is their best result of the season so far.
Somewhat bizarrely, Dortmund has won two of their three away trips in the Champions League. Wins on the road have come at Club Brugge (3-0) on Matchday 1 and Dinamo Zagreb (3-0) on Matchday 5.
The Black and Yellow sit fourth in the Champions League table on 12 points from five matches. Their only defeat was a 5-2 hammering at Real Madrid on Matchday 3. And they were 2-0 up with 30 minutes to play in that fixture.
Bayern Munich is now officially on a roll. Their 1-0 win over PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday saw previously under fire keeper Manuel Neuer secure his seventh successive clean sheet.
The run dates back to Bayern’s 4-1 humiliating defeat to Barcelona on Matchday 3 of the Champions League.
It is also the club’s best run of defensive shutouts since August and September 2011, when they went 10 matches without conceding under the guidance of Jupp Heynckes. Somewhat remarkably, Neuer was the goalkeeper during that run of clean sheets as well.
Domestically, Munich are still unbeaten. Head coach Vincent Kompany’s team has won nine of their 11, drawing the other two. Only Leverkusen (1-1) and Frankfurt (3-3) have prevented Bayern from winning in the Bundesliga this season.
Munich has won their last five in the Bundesliga, scoring 16 and conceding none. And they are on a seven-match winning streak in all competitions, scoring 18 and conceding none.
One word of caution would be that goals have dried up for Kompany’s team recently.
Bayern has won three of their last four matches 1-0. And in their most recent Bundesliga fixture, a 3-0 home win over Augsburg, they needed a 63rd minute penalty from Harry Kane to break the deadlock. Their second and third goals also came deep into stoppage time.
The lack of goals could be a symptom of their improved defensive displays. But the statistics in all those matches show that Bayern dominated. So it’s probably only a matter of time before the goals start flowing again.
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich betting tips
Dortmund has a 100% home record, Bayern haven’t conceded a goal in seven in all competitions. At least one of these runs will come to an end in Der Klassiker on Saturday.
This is the time of the year when Bayern grind out results. They know how to negotiate this period of the season when teams play in Europe in midweek and domestically at the weekend. The league leaders are simply better at handling it than Dortmund is.
A win for the visitors looks the most likely outcome. You can find more wagering options in our Dortmund vs Bayern betting tips below:
Both teams to score and Bayern to win
It wouldn’t be a huge shock to see Dortmund take something from this match. But on current form, we have to stick with a Bayern team that is on a winning run.
Dortmund are the fourth highest scorers in the Bundesliga. The downside for them is they also concede a lot. Along with Leverkusen, they have the joint-worst defensive record of the top eight in the division.
At home, Dortmund has scored 18 goals with a minimum of two in all six fixtures. They have also conceded six in total, keeping only two clean sheets.

It’s highly unlikely that Bayern won’t score. Indeed, a match against the highly open Dortmund is the sort of fixture that could get Bayern scoring freely again.
We can see Dortmund ending Bayern’s run of clean sheets, and Bayern ending Dortmund’s 100% home record with a win.

Over 3.5 goals
Bayern have tightened up at the back in recent weeks. And they have also slowed down in the goal scoring stakes.
But Der Klassiker is one of those fixtures where sometimes it’s more like a basketball match and all the usual form and statistics fly out of the window.
The last ten Der Klassiker matches have provided 45 goals. Only last season’s 2-0 win for Dortmund in Munich has failed to provide at least four goals in those ten matches.
The two teams combined have scored 58 goals (Bayern 36/Dortmund 22) in the Bundesliga this season. They are likely to provide a few more on Saturday.

Jamal Musiala to score anytime
Jamal Musiala has five goals in nine Bundesliga matches this season. The crucial statistic is that all his goals have come on the road.
In Bayern’s most recent away match in the Bundesliga, the talented attacking midfielder proved to be the difference, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at St. Pauli.
Musiala is clearly one of the main beneficiaries of Harry Kane’s hold up play. He has become very adept at stepping into the gap left when Kane drops deep, as their link up play continues to evolve.
There are likely to be plenty of chances for Bayern and Musiala in the match against Dortmund. And at odds just a touch under 2/1, sticking with Musiala to score on the road again looks worthwhile.
