NFL free agency kicked off this week, but it’s actually a potential trade that has made the biggest news. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, his intention is to play for the New York Jets. He also said the Packers and Jets are working on a trade, which is something that has been rumoured to be in the works for weeks.

Although Rodgers has not officially been traded, most NFL insiders expect a deal to be completed. NFL betting lines are shifting significantly because of the Rodgers news and Sports Interaction is covering the biggest changes.

Aaron Rodgers

The 39-year-old Rodgers has spent his entire career with the Packers, leading the team to a Super Bowl title in 2011 as Super Bowl MVP. Rodgers is a 10-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. Including back-to-back years in 2020 and 2021, he has won four league MVPs, the second-most of any player ever behind Peyton Manning’s five.

Since being selected 24th overall in the 2005 draft, Rodgers has thrown for 59,055 yards in his career, ninth-most in NFL history and 475 touchdowns, fifth-most.

If Rodgers does end up with the Jets, he will be closely following the path of his Green Bay predecessor, Brett Favre. The Packers shipped Favre to the Jets in a 2008 trade after the emergence of Rodgers as Green Bay’s new starting quarterback. Despite his individual success, Rodgers has had a contentious relationship with the Packers franchise over the last few seasons and a split has seemed inevitable.

Green Bay finished last season with an 8-9 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018. If Rodgers gets his wish and is traded, he’ll join a Jets team that finished with a 7-10 record last season to miss the playoffs for a 12th straight year.

Super Bowl betting odds

The New York Jets were the biggest climbers on the NFL futures board since Rodgers announced his desire to join the team. New York originally opened at +2200 to win next year’s Super Bowl and have now jumped to +981. That’s still nearly ten times the return on your bet.

A $100 pre-season bet on the Jets winning the Super Bowl would earn you just under $1,000 if they lift the Lombardi Trophy. With the odds likely to jump even further after Rodgers is officially traded to New York, it’s best to jump on the Jets sooner rather than later.

Defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City remains the favourite to win next year at +385, while San Francisco (+516) and Buffalo (+537)  round out the top three. That means a $100 pre-season bet on these teams to win the Super Bowl would earn you $385 with Kansas City, $516 with San Francisco and $537 with Buffalo.

NFL MVP betting odds

It’s pretty clear what the most valued position in football is as the top-nine MVP favourites for next season are all quarterbacks. Rodgers, the winner of two of the last three MVP awards, is +1011 to win again next year. A $100 bet on Rodgers would earn you $1,011. That could be great value for a future Hall of Famer who has reportedly already given his potential new team a wishlist of available receivers to target.

Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, last year’s regular season MVP, remains the favourite to repeat next season. A $100 bet on Mahomes would earn you $454 if he wins.

A good value option could be Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP. The Ravens’ quarterback has been negotiating a new long-term contract for two years and has every reason to put up big statistics this year. A $100 on Jackson would earn you $1,126.

New York Jets betting odds

The Jets have clearly seen the biggest jump up the odds board following the news Rodgers would like to play in New York. They now have the second-best odds to win the AFC East at +210, trailing only the Buffalo Bills. That means a $100 pre-season bet on the Jets to win the division would earn you $210.

New York has moved up to the fourth-best odds to win the AFC outright at +645, trailing only Kansas City (+287), Buffalo (+376) and Cincinnati (+392). A $100 bet on the Jets to win the AFC would earn you $645. That could be a great return considering this team will likely be led by a four-time league MVP and future Hall of Famer in Rodgers next season.
